Eight ways to travel
slower through Japan.

From local trains to neighborhood sento, a gentler way to see the country.

01 · Start smaller

Let one neighborhood be enough.

Japan rewards attention. Choose one small area, find its morning rhythm, and let the day unfold from there. The best discoveries are usually the ones you did not schedule.

“Two nights is a stopover. Four nights is a place you can begin to understand.”
Smart move

Swap one high-speed connection for a local train. You will see the suburbs, arrive less hurried, and often spend less.

02 · Take the local train

The Shinkansen is a small miracle, but it is not the only way to move. On a free afternoon, choose the slower line and watch the landscape change one station at a time.

03 · Book fewer bases

Three hotels in ten days can turn a holiday into a logistics exercise. Pick two or three bases and let day trips come to you.

04 · Make mornings yours

Temples, markets, and popular streets feel entirely different before the tour buses arrive. Put your most anticipated place first on the day, then keep the afternoon loose.
